When was the last time you said ‘yes’ to something new, to an experience, responsibility, role, friend? A YES especially to an opportunity you did not feel up to?
As people, we err on the side of caution. In fact I used to be a glass half empty kind of gal until a friend told me to stop focusing on the level of liquid in the glass and just get up to buy the next round!
Whilst said friend was obviously thirsty, the point is that there are always reasons to get caught in negative thinking and say no, but that won’t get us anywhere. The power of YES opens us up to opportunities and gives us the chance to step out of our comfort zone and grow.
In our last two generationYOU live events, the power of yes took centre stage. It was a clear theme of not only the first event in Sydney but also the second in Adelaide – and this was completely coincidental!
Speakers spoke about how ‘yes’ opens doors to new connections; added responsibilities; better roles; opportunities to strengthen our skills; and surprising results, even if we are a bit nervous.
Richard Branson is more eloquent than me: ‘If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, SAY YES, then learn how to do it later’. Sheryl Sandberg also shares the same sentiment: ‘If you’re offered a seat on a rocket ship, don’t ask what seat! Just get on’
If we let fear or a perceived lack of knowledge hold us back, then we will never grow. So the next time someone offers you an opportunity say, ‘YES’ and do your best to prove that you were the right person to give the opportunity to!
