I think we can all agree that communication is one of the most important elements in our lives!! And there are so many different factors that go into being a good communicator … whether that be verbal, written or through our body language.
Because I LOVE digging deep into topics, I want to chat to you about how we can channel honesty through communication and why it’s important.
Firstly, let’s talk about less predictive part of this topic – how we communicate with ourselves. When we say something, yes the words reach the person we are talking to, but they also reach our own brains because we said ‘it’ out loud.
Here are a few reasons why we should always stay honest for our own sake:
1 // Lying overcomplicates your response to a problem.
Imagine you screwed up and needed to report the mistake to your boss. If you lie, you will start a complex conversation with yourself which will be distracting you from focusing on solving the problem.
Now your brain will be judging, defending, blaming and justifying your lie all at the same time – instead of focusing on solving the problem that occurred in the first place!
Having to remember details of the lie, and continuing to carrying through with it, will only make your life and workplace more complex!
2 // We only harm ourselves more than others …
Situations when you commit to something you already know you will not follow will tend to add more stress to our schedules.
As a result of such false commitments we suffer from thoughts like ‘I’m not good enough’, ‘I am a failure’ and ‘I let people down’. Try to be honest and realistic with yourself before agreeing to do something as YOU are the first person you should look after.
Same goes for little lies like ‘I’m fine’, ‘I’m OK’ and ‘Not a big deal’ in times when you don’t feel OK or something is actually a big deal for you. Words like this might not mean anything to the person in front of you, while you are undermining your feelings – which can put you in even worse position in the end.
Telling the truth is not only about ourselves of course, we are always directly responsible for our own words! The people around us form their opinions based on many things including how honest we are.

Even one lie can turn people against you … especially if these people rely on you. The lie may not ever be revealed but your boss might sense something and your future with the company can go out of the door. Good reputation and respect at work are one of the biggest contributors to employee happiness, are you ready to sacrifice that to cover up your mistakes?
2 // Being Trustworthy = Career Growth?
You will be surprised how much your honesty plays in career growth. Good leaders become GREAT due to their transparency, honesty and trustworthiness as much as other great leadership traits!
There are many articles that talk about initiating honest communication when you are a leader, but I think honesty should be channelled at all stages of our career! That way you can continue doing what you like and progress in your career with integrity and respect.
