It’s June and I’m feeling the mid-year blues… When I find myself moping about everything from my studies to my work to my social life.
It seems to happen every year around this time. It’s partly due to being smack-bang between the refreshed feeling of a New Year, and the promise of a Christmas break. And also due to the chill that winter brings (I’m not insane! Seasonal Affective Disorder is a thing! It’s where the body feels de-energised and the brain a bit depressed due to the reduced hours of sunlight in the day).
Whatever the reason, I’m in that middle-of-the-year slump. But rather than wish away the months from here to Christmas, I’ve got an action plan for making June/July the perfect mid-year refresh.
Step 1>> Acknowledge how you’re feeling
Even if it really is just the colder weather bringing you down, the first step is simply acknowledging how you’re feeling. And don’t let anyone tell you it isn’t real! Google SAD…
Step 2>> Make a list
Write out a to-do list of ‘refreshing’ things. Perhaps it’s cleaning out your wardrobe, or making up big batches of soup to put away in the freezer for a quick and easy dinner to warm you up.
Think of things which breathe some new life and organisation into the second half of the year. New Year’s Resolutions are great! But so are Monday resolutions… or mid-week resolutions… or 2pm resolutions.
Step 3>> Reward yourself!
When you’ve ticked something off your list, make sure there’s a reward waiting for you. It might be as simple as snuggling up to a movie with popcorn and hot chocolate – yum!
When you’re waking up and getting home in the dark, it can be easy to let a workout (or two) slip – we get it! But if you can even find 15 minutes in the day to get out of the house and get moving, those happy exercise endorphins will work wonders!
And if all of this doesn’t work, just know that every winter that has ever been was followed by Spring. And this one isn’t any different. Warmer days and fresh flowers are coming!
